Background of the Restoration Project
The German naval aviators have an Arado Ar 196, which came to Nordholz as a loan from the United States of America. Since the 1990s, interested German groups have repeatedly tried to bring back one of the former airplanes of the heavy cruiser PRINZ EUGEN to Germany. In 2012 this wish became reality.
The goal is now the restoration of the Arado 196 - the standard seaplane of the Second World War. A challenging task, since massive interventions and damage to the object have been recorded in recent decades. After a couple of years of no action, in June 2016, the "Förderverein Arado 196 e.V." was established. In close coordination with the Navy, the Arado 196 association will drive ahead the restoration of the aircraft with volunteer commitment to eventually exhibit the aircraft in the German airship and naval aviation museum AERONAUTICUM in Nordholz.
